Lab Safety

ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD, DRINK OR RELATED WASTE IN THE LAB

  • Dispose of food and drink trash OUTSIDE of the lab before entering.
  • Never dispose of food/drink in the lab trash or recycling receptacles.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

At all times while working at the CMI, wear appropriate PPE, in accordance with EHS and COMS guidelines:

  • Closed-toed shoes that cover feet
  • Clothing that covers the legs
  • Gloves, when needed (BL1 materials and chemical hazards)
  • Lab coat, as needed

Locations of Safety Items

  • The Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA) for waste management is located in the fume hood.
  • Fire extinguishers are located by windows in bay 1 and 3.
  • Eyewash station available at the sink.
  • Safety shower is located outside C-302 (across the corridor).
  • First Aid Kit is located over Desk outside C-303A (Kelly's office).
  • Building Spill Kit is in 3rd floor corridor to LHRRB/SGM (turn left outside the lab).

Biosafety

  • All samples must be BSL1-compliant (unless prior approval is requested from the CMI).

Laser Safety

  • Some CMI instruments have embedded lasers.   
  • All lasers at the CMI are classified as Class I laser instruments with embedded Class IIIb lasers and appropriate safety precautions should be followed when using these instruments.

Enclosed Laser Instrument Standard Operating Procedure

CMI Users should follow these guidelines when working with enclosed laser instruments:

  • Complete an “Enclosed Laser Instrument Safety” course, available through the Harvard Training Portal or at their home institution.
  • Follow the Instrument’s CMI Standard Protocol for safe instrument use.  The most current version is available for each instrument on the Instruments page at the CMI website.
  • Never bypass instrument interlocks or remove instrument access panels, at any time.
  • Ask for assistance or retraining if unsure about safe work practices on any instrument.
